Acadia National Park In One VERY LONG Day
Maine’s Acadia National Park has hundreds of trails for hikers and many scenic attractions. A national treasure, its 47,000 acres are primarily located on Mount Desert Island, and many travelers use the bayside town of Bar Harbor as a gateway to the park. Below is what we did in one very long day in Acadia National Park.
Walk Sand Beach
Sand Beach is a small area measuring 290 yards (265m) long. What it lacks in length, it makes up for in beauty. Marvel at the rocky coast and enjoy a day out in the sun swimming in the cool water. Note: It doesn’t get higher than 55F (12.7C) in the summer.
Get Splashed at Thunder Hole
Thunder Hole is a naturally formed inlet that makes a deep thunderous sound when a large wave rolls in. Why? A small cavern formed just below the surface of the water, and when air enters as the wave rolls in, a loud sound emits. The resulting splash can go as high as 40ft (36.5m) into the air!
Hike Along Park Loop Road
Park Loop Road offers a great overview of Acadia National Park. The 27-mile (43.4-kilometer) road leads you around the park, connecting the rocky coast to the mountains, forest and lakes.
Explore Boulder Beach
Boulder beach gets its unofficial name from the beach filled with rocks of all shapes and sizes. The rocks have been smoothed over years of erosive acts from the wind and water.
Eat Lobster
Maine is known for their lobster so we made it a point to try lobster rolls at one of the best restaurants for lobster rolls—Nor‘Easter Pound & Market. And the truth was that I HATED IT. The texture was chewy and the overall taste was too fishy. This experience has brought tears of laughter to our family for years now. I did my best to conceal my distaste for the lobster rolls but the kids knew I didn’t like it.
Stroll Jordan Pond
Set back from the coast, Jordan Pond Path is one of the most popular trails in the park. It’s an easy trail through the dense hardwood forest that offers breathtaking views of the crystal-clear water and the surrounding mountains. If you have the patience to wait, take an historic stop at the Jordan Pond House Restaurant for their tea with popovers & jam.
Make a Reservation for Cadillac Mountain
Cadillac Mountain is mainly pink granite, making it not just the highest mountain on Mount Desert Island but also the most beautiful. At 1,530 feet (466.3 meters), it’s the tallest point along the North Atlantic seaboard. People have enjoyed the spectacular views from Cadillac Mountain (formerly Green Mountain) for thousands of years, as this area is the homeland of the Wabanaki people. Vehicle reservations are required for Cadillac Summit Road from May through October. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the views were were hoping for during our visit.
